Meditation
quiet, and many may interpret this as meaning meditation can only be
for those who have time to laze around half the day. For this reason,
those people, such as business executives, who live a pressured life
with little or no time to spare, may assume that meditation can never
have a place in their lives. That is a shame, as meditation techniques
can be quite flexible and quite easy to fit in to a busy day.
The benefits of meditation can be so great to somebody under pressure,
that even a few minutes occasionally may bring a noticeable benefit.
For a busy executive to have reached their position in life, they are
likely to be determined and intelligent individuals. This can often
mean that, should they perceive a benefit in an activity, then they
will continue or extend that activity. It is therefore possible that
an executive trying out even a brief period of meditation may soon
adopt some meditation technique or other on a regular basis.
What type of meditation techniques may fit in with an executive
lifestyle? Important features of meditation are being able to breathe
well and consciously, relax and clear the mind, and then focus the
mind. An executive with perpetual meetings and a full diary, with
pressures to perform and maximise profits, may think such things
cannot be fitted into their busy lives.
It is true to say that the most powerful and beneficial meditation
sessions are prolonged. However, that does not mean short periods of
meditation are a waste of time; far from it. An executive is probably
geared up to packing as much into their day as possible and, although
it may be difficult to clear a hyperactive mind, they may well learn
to pack in short meditation sessions also. In so doing, they may well
find that those sessions give them a boost that is far greater and
more beneficial than caffeine.
So, what techniques can an executive use during their busy day? Here
are a few ideas:
1. If using public transport to get to and from work, and you are able
to sit down, it can be a good time to close your eyes, concentrate on
correct breathing, and try to shut out the surrounding sounds.
Commuting can be a very stressful experience every day of the week, so
a snatched meditation session, even in far from ideal conditions, may
minimize those negative effects, or even turn them on their head. In
fact, it can be good practice to try to meditate in difficult
conditions, as that makes ideal conditions even more beneficial later
on.
The secret to these train or bus sessions is not to fall asleep, and
to concentrate extra hard on maintaining the focus.
2. Do you go to a gym or health spa? Whether at lunch time or in the
evening, this can be a good time to tag on a short meditation session.
If you have finished your work out, you need some time to shower and
relax your body a bit. Following that with a 10 minute or more period
of meditation could work wonders. Most gyms or health spas will have a
room you can use for a short spell of peace, so it is worth asking. A
vacant massage room would serve the purpose.
3. Control your diary, and schedule in a mid morning and mid afternoon
"tea or coffee" break. Only instead of tea and coffee, drink water,
sit comfortably, focus on your breathing and then when totally
relaxed, have a short session of meditation, focusing on something
calming and not related to work. Even 10 minutes can provide a power
inducing respite from the day's work, and the chances are you will not
lose time, but rather gain time, as you will work more effectively.
Snatched meditation sessions spread through the day may not be the
stuff of traditional meditation, but they are certainly better than
none at all. Hopefully, the rejuvenated executive will perceive enough
benefits to set aside time in the evenings and weekends to learn full
meditation, and then be able to return to work at the top of is game
every weekday morning.

to plant medicinal plants for refreshing the air. Ponds and fountains
provide a calming atmosphere to visitors.
Meditation gardens are visited not only by meditating people, but also
travelers who want to enjoy a serene atmosphere with family and

• In our every day lives, we are all guilty of neglecting our minds,
allowing our brains to be lulled into a lazy, neglected, and unaware
state. It is as if we are allowing ourselves to be sculpted by bland
and repetitive consumerism, our individuality being chiselled away by
a tedium we cannot even be bothered to challenge with any will.
Life need not be like that. We are each blessed with a powerful mind;
but normally people have forgotten or, most likely, never even knew
how, to use it. It is such a waste of our own greatest resource.
One way to start to extricate ourselves from the mindless quicksand is
to gently exercise our minds, using mindfulness and meditation as a
way of bringing ourselves more emphatically into the real world, and
start the process of exercising control over our minds and our lives.
Creating a mindfulness meditation is a gentle but powerful exercise.
But how do you go about it?
A Simple Mindfulness Meditation Exercise
As with any meditation session, you need to get into a relaxed and
comfortable position, eyes closed, and then commence with deep nasal
breathing, focusing your thoughts on the breathing to ease yourself
into a meditative state.
Once you feel that you are calmed by your breathing and that your
breath is under your rhythmic control, then you can move on to
focusing on your own body, a part at a time. I was first taught this
at yoga class, where we were taught to concentrate first of all on the
left foot, focusing on it from a position above ourselves. Then move
up the body slowly, left ankle, knee, thigh and so on. When reaching
your head, you then do the same in reverse on the other side of the
body: right shoulder, right elbow, right hand and so on.
Once you have completed your tour of your own body, as if you were
someone else examining it, then it is time to open your eyes and
increase your mindfulness of your surroundings.
To do this, focus on any object in the room; it does not have to be
anything special: a cup on the coffee table, a vase, a plastic flower,
anything. Try to maintain that focus for half a minute, and then move
on to any other object. You can repeat this several times, always
maintaining a focus on your own body and your own breathing, creating
a triple harmony with each object on which you focus.
By using this simple mindfulness meditation you are increasing
awareness both of yourself and your surroundings, in a very gentle and
easy way. It can serve as a prelude to some mental task, as well as
being part of an ongoing mindfulness campaign to strengthen and expand
the use of your own mind.
For example, most days I write, but sometimes I just do not seem able
to concentrate on what I am supposed to be writing about. I find this
type of exercise, even just for 10 minutes, will snap me out of that
inexplicable malaise, and I can get right on and write what I should
have written earlier.

It's a fine sunny day in the forest and a lion is sitting outside his cave, lying lazily in the sun. Along comes a fox, out on a walk.
Fox: "Do you know the time, because my watch is broken"
Lion: "Oh, I can easily fix the watch for you"
Fox: "Hmm... But it's a very complicated mechanism, and your big claws will only destroy it even more."
Lion: "Oh no, give it to me, and it will be fixed"
Fox: "That's ridiculous! Any fool knows that lazy lions with great claws cannot fix complicated watches"
Lion: "Sure they do, give it to me and it will be fixed"
The lion disappears into his cave, and after a while he comes back with the watch which is running perfectly. The fox is impressed, and the lion continues to lie lazily in the sun, looking very pleased with himself.
Soon a wolf comes along and stops to watch the lazy lion in the sun.
Wolf: "Can I come and watch TV tonight with you, because mine is broken"
Lion: "Oh, I can easily fix your TV for you"
Wolf: "You don't expect me to believe such rubbish, do you? There is no way that a lazy lion with big claws can fix a complicated TV.
Lion: "No problem. Do you want to try it?"
The lion goes into his cave, and after a while comes back with a perfectly fixed TV. The wolf goes away happily and amazed.
Scene : Inside the lion's cave. In one corner are half a dozen small and intelligent looking rabbits that are busily doing very complicated work with very detailed instruments. In the other corner lies a huge lion looking very pleased with himself.
Moral: IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY A MANAGER IS FAMOUS; LOOK AT THE WORK OF HIS SUBORDINATES.

Fox: "What are you working on?"
Rabbit: "My thesis."
Fox: "Hmm... What is it about?"
Rabbit: "Oh, I'm writing about how rabbits eat foxes."
Fox: "That's ridiculous! Any fool knows that rabbits don't eat foxes!
Rabbit: "Come with me and I'll show you!"
They both disappear into the rabbit's burrow. After few minutes, gnawing on a fox bone, the rabbit returns to his typewriter and resumes typing.
Soon a wolf comes along and stops to watch the hardworking rabbit.
Wolf: "What's that you are writing?"
Rabbit: "I'm doing a thesis on how rabbits eat wolves."
Wolf: "you don't expect to get such rubbish published, do you?"
Rabbit: "No problem. Do you want to see why?"
The rabbit and the wolf go into the burrow and again the rabbit returns by himself, after a few minutes, and goes back to typing.
Finally a bear comes along and asks, "What are you doing?
Rabbit: "I'm doing a thesis on how rabbits eat bears."
Bear: "Well that's absurd!"
Rabbit: "Come into my home and I'll show you"
Scene : As they enter the burrow, the rabbit introduces the bear to the lion.
Moral: IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW SILLY YOUR THESIS TOPIC IS; WHAT MATTERS IS WHOM YOU HAVE AS A SUPERVISOR.

Zen stories
Once an old saint was sitting under a tree meditating. At that time one man came and asked harshly “Hey, old man. Have you seen anybody passing through this way? ”
The old man replied. “No. I did not see anybody”.
After sometime, another person can came and asked seriously. “Hey, old man. Have you seen anybody passing through this way? ”
The old man said. “Yes sir. One man came and asked the same question earlier.”
Before long another person came and asked politely. “Hey, noble soul.. Have you seen anybody passing through this way? ” The old man replied with respect “Yes your majesty. Two persons came earlier and asked the same question. The first one was your soldier and the second, your minister, your majesty.”..
The King was very happy and was about to leave. Then he noticed that the old saint was blind. The astonished King asked the saint “In spite of being blind, how could you know that they were soldier and the minister?”
“The way they asked.” replied the saint. The first one was very rude. The typical style of a soldier. But the second one was more serious and rational. Then it must be the minister.
Then, You the Majesty were very cordial, humble and respectful. Nobody other than the king can be like that.”
The King was happy to note the saint’s wisdom and returned happily remembering these words.

A university professor went to visit a famous Zen master. While the master quietly served tea, the professor talked about Zen. The master poured the visitor's cup to the brim, and then kept pouring. The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself. "It's overfull! No more will go in!" the professor blurted. "You are like this cup," the master replied, "How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup."

Impatiently, the student answered, "But I want to master it faster than that. I will work very hard. I will practice everyday, ten or more hours a day if I have to. How long will it take then?" The teacher thought for a moment, "20 years."

The Present Moment

A Japanese warrior was captured by his enemies and thrown into prison. That night he was unable to sleep because he feared that the next day he would be interrogated, tortured, and executed. Then the words of his Zen master came to him, "Tomorrow is not real. It is an illusion. The only reality is now." Heeding these words, the warrior became peaceful and fell asleep.

Sounds of Silence________________________________________
Four monks decided to meditate silently without speaking for two weeks. By nightfall on the first day, the candle began to flicker and then went out. The first monk said, "Oh, no! The candle is out." The second monk said, "Aren't we not suppose to talk?" The third monk said, "Why must you two break the silence?" The fourth monk laughed and said, "Ha! I'm the only one who didn't speak."

"Each monk broke the silence for a different reason, each of which is a common stumbling block to meditation. The first monk became distraced by one element of the world (the candle) and so lost sight of the rest. The second monk was more worried about rules than the meditation itself. The third monk let his anger at the first two rule him. And the final monk was lost in his ego."
The path is open to its failures as they are the stones to its success.
"I am reminded of a car game I used to play with my children called 'Listening for Silence.' The object of the game for me was to stop the noise in the car. The object of the game for the children was to see who could resist speaking the longest by listening for silence. If the first child spoke and the second child automatically burst out proclaiming victory, then both children lost. The object was to listen for silence and silence speaks for itself"
Things do not always go as planned.
This is symbolic of something else, I know, but I'll just say it the way it was told. If you're used to talking, it's going to be hard to resist the temptation to talk, moreso when you're with others, which I would think they would've thought of. It's like telling someone who sees just fine to close their eyes for a week, staying awake, and not open them at all, no matter what noises they heard. It's pretty near impossible to resist temptation when you've never had to resist that type of temptation before.
You could have ended the story at the point when "the candle flickered and went out."
The four monks have each broken their silence for an altogether different reason. But another side is in the fact that the 4th monk spoke at all. Had he simply maintained his silence, he would've been successful in his endeavor. But if he had, in all likelihood, the other three would've probably continued to argue and not even noticed his silence. I know many people who are like the 4th monk; their motto: If I'm doing something good and no one is watching (or no one notices), I might as well not be doing it at all. They believe that the reward is not in the effort, but in the recognition.
Were I a fifth monk I would wait 10 minutes into the exercise, stand up and yell loudly. HAAAAAAH I LOSE!!!! Then walk out to do some non-competitive meditation.
Enter a woods and hear the wilderness listen. That's where you'll find it.... John, your "Ph.D." is not silent.
This story reminds me a teaching. When you meditate in breathing, you should concentrate your mind to your breath only and cast out all thoughts, including a thought that you are breathing.
"If you can describe the zen then you do not know it. 'The buffalo left his enclosure for the abyss, his head passed the doorway, his shoulders, girth and haunches, yet his tail would not pass through' - - koan from the gateless gate"
"Oaths and Promises - Lightly spoken..Hardly Kept."
It is the provence of knowledge to speak; it is the privilege of wisdom - to listen.
It is clear from reading the story that none of the monks are spiritually ready to perform the difficult silent meditation. Unfocused and easily distracted by their surroundings(the burnt out candle and the conversations of themselves) they all failed to reach their aim of meditating in silent for two weeks. I see the moral of the story is 'to plan thoroughly and be solidly ready before embarking on an action. Focus your mind constantly in reaching your aim, and the objective will be reached, no matter how hard it is.'
Practice Makes Perfect

A dramatic ballad singer studied under a strict teacher who insisted that he rehearse day after day, month after month the same passage from the same song, without being permitted to go any further. Finally, overwhelmed by frustration and despair, the young man ran off to find another profession. One night, stopping at an inn, he stumbled upon a recitation contest. Having nothing to lose, he entered the competition and, of course, sang the one passage that he knew so well. When he had finished, the sponsor of the contest highly praised his performance. Despite the student's embarrassed objections, the sponsor refused to believe that he had just heard a beginner perform. "Tell me," the sponsor said, "who is your instructor? He must be a great master." The student later became known as the great performer Koshiji.

Is That So?

A beautiful girl in the village was pregnant. Her angry parents demanded to know who was the father. At first resistant to confess, the anxious and embarrassed girl finally pointed to Hakuin, the Zen master whom everyone previously revered for living such a pure life. When the outraged parents confronted Hakuin with their daughter's accusation, he simply replied "Is that so?"
When the child was born, the parents brought it to the Hakuin, who now was viewed as a pariah by the whole village. They demanded that he take care of the child since it was his responsibility. "Is that so?" Hakuin said calmly as he accepted the child.
For many months he took very good care of the child until the daughter could no longer withstand the lie she had told. She confessed that the real father was a young man in the village whom she had tried to protect. The parents immediately went to Hakuin to see if he would return the baby. With profuse apologies they explained what had happened. "Is that so?" Hakuin said as he handed them the child.

That girl is a lying slut.
Hakuin must have been aware of his perceived status in the community. He accepted his charge by a member of the community unencumbered. With compassion he completed the mission.
No matter. That child was as we all once were. The only difference is in being. Hakuin excepted anothers lie for truth as proof of his virtue of ethics and morality.
"To be in harmony with the world."
The monks calmness is admirable, but the idea that one should not speak the truth when confronted with a lie is potentially very harmful. Perhaps the monk did not recognize his reputation among the people or the impact it would have on them, because if the daughter never admited to lying about who the childs true father was, she may have created a spirit of cynicism among the people. That even the most 'spiritual' types of people are not really so, but are simply putting on an act is what alot of people would have taken from this situation if the truth never arose. People shouldn't be dependent on the oppinions of others for their happiness, but they should also recognize the impact that their life will make on others and therefore not permit calumny to prevail.

So what? So what if he was or wasn't the father. Details can not overshadow what is right or wrong. Everyone allowed themselves to be bothered by truly trivial details, and allowed these trivial details to act as ethical guiedelines for action.
questions lead to the truth. Have you ever heard the following in a conversation "Well why didn't you tell me?! 'Because you didn't ask.' "? It is the same here. Nobody asked Hakuin if he was the father, nobody asked if he would care for the child, and nobody asked for it back. We must learn to ask the right questions of the world around us, and to request, not demand all the time.
People will act on their own convictions if there is no response.
Just because everyone "knows" something to be true does not mean that it is.
People saying something does not make it true...Knowing yourself is the most importent thing.
No matter what your reputation is, no matter how much your virtue is praised, because it depends on the opinions of others, it does not reflect the Real You.
I like Richard Bach's Messiah's Handbook from "Illusions": Live, never to be ashamed, if what you do or say is published around the world. Even is what is published is not true.
Even a large stone cannot stop the river. Its resistance marks its demise.
Perhaps it is too obvious that "Is that so?" is both a passive challenge to the accusers and an invitation to look more deeply into the matter -- both of which were repeatedly declined. The Hakuin wisely declines to force the issue, accepting minor injustice while avoiding greater disharmony.
The master has achieved complete acceptance of every person, situation and emotion. He has no fear of being unjustly labeled. He receives the child and gives up the child with the same peace of mind. He is both a detached observer and a complete participant.
The Zen master taught that there is no difference between truth and lie, because all happenings in life will be experienced through the filter of our sense-organs. That is why he reacted equally to both, the accusation and the apology. Another example that children born out of wedlock are foistered onto others who must then pay for the bundle of joy. No mention is stated of the devestating effects of terminating a baby's initial bonding with a caretaker. I'll bet the monk never recieved a Father's Day card.
When I read this story for the first time I thought that the only words that Hakuin knew were "is that so?". I then thought that couldn't be right so I read it again. Now I just don't know what to think.
So what?
In asking the question "is that so?" perhaps the Zen master was trying to tip the people about truth. It is not subjective. It IS. He may not have believed their apology at the end as true as he did not believe their accusations as true. Their judgement of him was not relevant (to him.) The truth IS the truth and is what matters.

Truth is what you make it. In a Society Truth is what most of the people think it is -- or is it ?

Provided he makes and wins an argument about Buddhism with those who live there, any wandering monk can remain in a Zen temple. If he is defeated, he has to move on.
In a temple in the northern part of Japan two brother monks were dwelling together. The elder one was learned, but the younger one was stupid and had but one eye.
A wandering monk came and asked for lodging, properly challenging them to a debate about the sublime teaching. The elder brother, tired that day from much studying, told the younger one to take his place. "Go and request the dialogue in silence," he cautioned.
So the young monk and the stranger went to the shrine and sat down.
Shortly afterwards the traveler rose and went in to the elder brother and said: "Your young brother is a wonderful fellow. He defeated me."
"Relate the dialogue to me," said the elder one.
"Well," explained the traveler, "first I held up one finger, representing Buddha, the enlightened one. So he held up two fingers, signifying Buddha and his teaching. I held up three fingers, representing Buddha, his teaching, and his followers, living the harmonious life. Then he shook his clenched fist in my face, indicating that all three come from one realization. Thus he won and so I have no right to remain here." With this, the traveler left.
"Where is that fellow?" asked the younger one, running in to his elder brother.
"I understand you won the debate."
"Won nothing. I'm going to beat him up."
"Tell me the subject of the debate," asked the elder one.
"Why, the minute he saw me he held up one finger, insulting me by insinuating that I have only one eye. Since he was a stranger I thought I would be polite to him, so I held up two fingers, congratulating him that he has two eyes. Then the impolite wretch held up three fingers, suggesting that between us we only have three eyes. So I got mad and started to punch him, but he ran out and that ended it!"
How to keepa clean desk
Having a clean desk has a lot of benefits. You become more organized, it is easier to focus on one thing at a time, you fulfill security and confidentiality requirements and a clean desk gets washed more often by the cleaning staff. However, maintaining a clean is a challenge for many of us. I therefore made a collection of easy tips that will help reducing the clutter on your desk.
1) Have an in- and outbox:
This alone will have a large impact since you organize the document traffic to and from your desk. All new items first go to the inbox and remain there until you start working on them.
2) Handle each document once only:
A major source for wasting time and keeping too many documents on your desk is starting something without finishing it. So when taking a document in your hand, try to accomplish all related tasks, so that it can go into the outbox, filing or delegated area.
3) Throw more away:
Be selective in filing. In case of doubt - throw it away. Be careful with documents that fall under legal or company policy retention periods.
4) Clean your desk every day:
Clean your desk every day before you leave the office. You reduce the maintenance effort through the daily exercise rather than making a big cleaning once per week or month. Another benefit is that you will enjoy a clean desk every morning when you arrive at your desk.
5) Don’t use post-its:
Post-its are a great invention. But people using them a lot tend to have them scattered all over their working place. The risk is high to overlook or lose them. Instead you better have a nice notepad on your desk, where you input all notes and reminders. You go through the notes from time to time and update your to-do list and other information and strike them out after completion. If you really can’t live without the colorful post-its you can also use an electronic version on your computer. It keeps your desk clean, it is easy to carry them with you and the probability of losing one is lower.
6) Reduce the number of pens:
Did you ever compare the number of pens in and on your desk with the number of pens you really use on a daily basis? Throw away all the pens you don’t need or don’t like and keep your 2 or 3 favorite ones. The same accounts for markers - in general two or maximum three colors will be sufficient.
7) How about photo frames:
Having photos of people we care about on our desk is a nice thing, but the frames also requires precious space. Reduce the photos as much as possible or even ban them from your desk. You can have these photos on your mobile phone or on a website like Flickr, where you can arrange nice photoshows. This also has the advantage that you are able to look at them when you are out of office.
8 ) Take your books home:
Many people keep a large number of private books in their office. Most of the time these libraries seem to serve as an impressive demonstration of the owner’s knowledge rather than being used regularly. Take the unused books home and free up your desk. If you want to keep certain knowledge with you, make an extract of the best information and store it on the Internet or your PC.
9) Don’t collect magazines, newspapers, etc.
A lot piles I have seen in other people’s offices are made of all kind of magazines and newspapers they want to read later. In fact these piles tend to become higher and higher and correlate with the feeling of desperation just thinking of getting through all that stuff. If you see an article you want to read later, take out or copy the page and don’t keep the entire magazine or newspaper. If you keep the whole thing, you sometimes even don’t remember anymore what you found interesting. Never keep daily newspapers. You can find most articles online and the really important things wil be covered for more than one day anyhow. If you have difficulties getting through your daily newspaper I recommend reading a weekly. They focus on the summary and you can skip the daily events.
10) Don’t print emails to read them:
Don’t print emails to read them. This is wasting time, printing costs and it is a very good source to keep your table scattered. If you feel that it is hard to read emails on the screen, consider purchasing a bigger screen. I am sure that this investment will pay off quickly.
