My present activities are spread over the triple domains of Research, Teaching and Extension Education in Agriculture. The research activities include undertaking independent development oriented research projects besides co-coordinating and monitoring all the research projects coming under the project o-ordination group “Transfer of Technology”. My research endeavour also includes providing research guidance to Msc and PhD level research scholars. The development oriented research activities are undertaken every year at selected villages, which comprises of conducting detailed Participatory Rural Appraisals, formulating development projects for optimum utilization of natural resources suited for the area, implementing them with the help of development departments and assessing the impact of these implemented projects in the overall standard of living of the people in the area. Developmental activities are based on watershed management concepts, which include identification of watershed areas, conducting resource mapping and participatory rural appraisals in the area, SWOT analysis and formulation of a proposed developmental project indented for the overall development of the concerned region. The developmental projects implemented based on this include bee-keeping, vermicomposting, fish culture, mixed farming systems, new intercropping patterns suited to the area, introduction of new profitable crops and improved varieties of existing crops etc.
As part of the extension activities, technical and training support are given to the State Government, Department of Agriculture, Local Government bodies such as the panchayaths, Non-governmental organizations in the field of agriculture. Training is also given to farmers on matters of improved farming techniques and guidance is provided for formation of Self Help Groups and neighbourhood groups etc., for improving cooperation among the farmers,farm women and farm youth. I was also able to serve as the resource person for various governmental and non governmental agencies for entrepreneurship development programes,training for improving teaching and communication skills, stress management, farm journalism, bee keeping ,organic farming and sustainable agriculture etc.As a correspondent of Kerala Agricultural University, Southern Region of the state, the salient research findings are communicated to the clients through the various print and electronic media .In addition also attend the periodic farm advisory committee meetings of All India Radio and Doordarshan(the Official television network in India) for charting out the relevant programs to be broadcast to the rural community. I have participated in the periodic workshops on research and extension Programs and research extension interface, and also associated with then Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council of Kerala in its formation, functioning, monitoring and assessment of the Self Help Groups functioning in the State, also participates in farmers seminars and discussions, serves as a resource person for conducting training on Participatory Rural Appraisals and Participatory Technology Development programs for the State Department of Agriculture and various non governmental organizations. Another major extension activity undertaken now is conducting front line demonstrations and on farm trails of the various research findings of the Kerala Agricultural University in farmers field.
The teaching activity include handling courses for graduate and post
Graduate program including PhD. The major courses now handled include:
Rural Sociology, Communication, Extension Methods and Aids, Agricultural Journalism, Agricultural Extension Management, Training for Development, Program planning and development administration etc.
Being the coordinator of the Rural Agricultural Experience (RAWE) programme of the Final Year B.Sc students of Agriculture, I have gained a lot of experience in interdisciplinary team work. The RAWE team consists of experts from various disciplines viz., Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Agricultural entomology, Soil Science, Home Science, Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension. The six month long rural oriented training programme include various modules namely orientation and Interaction session, Water shed management and farm planning, Agro-clinics, Training in Regional research stations and agricultural polyclinics, Entrepreneurship Development Programme, NGO training and Village Stay Programme. This multi-disciplinary village oriented training programme has been co-ordinated by me for the last three consecutive years.
